If you're an independent prescriber or you run a small private clinic, you already know the consultation is rarely the hard part. The hard part is everything after it: getting a legally valid prescription to a pharmacy, chasing the patient for payment, and making sure the medicine actually arrives.
In 2026, patients expect that whole journey to happen online. A paper prescription in the post, or a request to "take this to your local pharmacy", feels out of step with a clinic that consults by video and books appointments in seconds.
Molecule CloudRx Prescribing and Dispensing Service closes that gap. It's an end-to-end digital prescribing platform that lets you send electronic prescriptions, have patients pay securely, and get medicines dispensed and delivered to their door anywhere in the UK, without running a dispensary or holding stock yourself.
This guide explains how it works, who it's for, and what to look for when choosing e-prescribing software for an independent practice.
Why independent prescribers need a digital prescribing platform
Large providers have operations teams to manage pharmacy relationships, payments and logistics. Independent prescribers and private clinics usually don't. That creates the same friction points again and again:
- Admin time. Writing, signing, scanning and sending prescriptions eats into clinical time.
- Payment leakage. Chasing patients to pay for medicines, or carrying the cost on the clinic's account, hurts cash flow.
- Patient drop-off. Every extra step between consultation and treatment is a chance for the patient to give up or go elsewhere.
- Stock and compliance risk. Holding medicines in-house brings storage, record-keeping and regulatory overhead most small clinics don't want.
- Disconnected systems. Prescribing in one tool, invoicing in another and tracking deliveries by email doesn't scale.
A good digital prescribing platform takes these off your plate so you can focus on the patient in front of you.
What is Molecule CloudRx?
Molecule CloudRx is a UK private prescription pharmacy partner, part of Molecule Group. It's a GPhC registered pharmacy (registration number 9011284) that works with CQC regulated prescribing partners to dispense and deliver private prescriptions for clinics, independent prescribers and veterinary practices.
Put simply: you prescribe, and CloudRx handles the rest. The pharmacy team dispenses each prescription and sends it on tracked delivery direct to the patient's door, anywhere in the UK.
For the prescriber, there is no setup fee, no licence cost and no minimum volume.
How Molecule CloudRx works, end to end
1. Issue an electronic prescription
You can send electronic prescriptions to CloudRx in three ways, depending on how your practice is set up:
- Practice management system (PMS) integration. Prescribe from the system you already use. Supported integrations include Semble, Cliniko, WriteUpp, Carebit, e-Clinic, MidexPro and Jump EHR.
- Web-based prescription pad. No PMS? Use the CloudRx prescription pad in your browser.
- Pharmacy API. If you've built your own healthcare platform, connect it directly to CloudRx.
Prescriptions sent through any of these routes are transmitted electronically and securely.
2. The patient is notified
Once the prescription is approved, the patient receives an email and a text message confirming that CloudRx has their prescription ready for dispensing.
3. The patient pays securely
That message includes a link to a secure payment page, where the patient pays for the medicine and postage. You don't need to take card details, raise invoices or chase payment.
If you'd rather cover the cost yourself, for example as part of a consultation package, CloudRx can invoice medicines and delivery to the prescriber or clinic instead.
4. Medicines are dispensed and delivered
The CloudRx pharmacy team dispenses the prescription and sends it on tracked delivery direct to the patient's door, anywhere in the UK. For patients on ongoing treatment, repeat dispensing support is available.
What makes an electronic prescription legally valid?
Patients and prescribers both need confidence that a digital prescription is as valid as a paper one. In the UK, private electronic prescriptions are governed by the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 (regulation 219). An electronic prescription must be signed with an advanced electronic signature, which is:
- uniquely linked to the prescriber
- capable of identifying the prescriber
- created using means that only the prescriber controls
- linked to the prescription data so that any later change is detectable
This is why a scanned or photographed paper prescription isn't the same thing as a true electronic prescription, and why purpose-built e-prescribing software matters.
A note on controlled drugs: Schedule 2 and 3 controlled drugs prescribed privately are subject to additional rules, including use of the standard private controlled drug prescription form. CloudRx dispenses controlled drugs, and our team will talk you through the correct process for these prescriptions when you onboard.
This section is general information, not legal advice. Always check current GPhC, MHRA and Home Office guidance for your circumstances.
What can you prescribe through CloudRx?
CloudRx dispenses routine private medicines as well as more specialist treatment areas, including:
- GLP-1 weight loss treatments
- Menopause and HRT
- ADHD medication
- Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)
- Controlled drugs
- Temperature-sensitive medicines
That breadth means a growing clinic can add new services without needing to find a new pharmacy partner for each one.
Built for small clinic healthcare technology needs
Plenty of e-prescribing tools are designed for hospitals or large groups. CloudRx is designed to work just as well for a single prescriber as for a multi-site clinic.

How to choose e-prescribing software for your practice
Whether or not you choose CloudRx, these are the questions worth asking any provider:
- Is the dispensing pharmacy GPhC registered? Check the register yourself.
- Are prescriptions truly electronic, with an advanced electronic signature, rather than scanned paper?
- Does it integrate with your PMS, or will you be re-keying patient data?
- Who takes payment, and can you choose between patient-pays and clinic-invoiced?
- What does it cost you? Watch for setup fees, monthly licences and volume minimums.
- Which treatment areas are supported, including controlled drugs and cold-chain medicines?
- How is delivery handled, and is it tracked to the patient's door?
- How quickly can you go live?
